| Under the RMA ( resource management act 1992) councils are obligated to control resource management as outlined in the act and in Auckland Citys case is: Blanket tree protection for all tree species with designaitions for native and exotic trees: Native trees protected over 6m in height and 600mm in diameter at bh(breast height) Exotic trees protected over 8m in height and 800mm in diameter at bh. Resource consents are required for any pruning or removal of protected trees over the designation and work without consent is to be done only with hand shears(secatuers). Dead trees and weed species are exempt. Councils outside Auckland have limited protection including a list of protected trees and a number of 'Scheduled' trees which effectively means not even dead twigs can be snapped off without consent. |

| Treekiwi hows it going, these regulations have been in place for a while now, do you know how long exactly? The RMA took effect in 1992 but when were the tree protection laws created and how were/are they policed past and present? This is benificial for the trees in Auckland but whats your take on it? Cheers Jimmy

| I understand the DBH thing but the height tag gets me. You see, GCCC here has a ht tag too, 4m I think. So bamboo would be protected and many other skinny tall things like pencil pines and palms? ![]()

| Hi Guys, Jim i believe that its been in effect since 95' but i will have to check, as far as my take goes, it has its benefits and negatives. The main benefit is stopping developers bulldozing sections but the main dis-advantage is that it can take up to 3 months for a consent to get processed and its not garanteed a result. also some of the council arborists seem to be de-tached from what the tree industry is about and at the end of the day everyone is there to make a dollar not necessarily massicure trees. Also there is alot of politically driven problems especially when dealing with historic trees and scheduled "phoenix palms' which means every little old lady can have there say on a tree issue, i think they should leave it up to the people than know. ![]() |
